晨兴花园堆肥

(Residents at 的 Morningside 花园s cooperative celebrate 的ir new 堆肥 program)

Organics make up almost 30% of NYC's residential 和 institutional waste stream. 这包括庭院垃圾, 食物残渣, 可降解纸(纸巾), 餐巾, 脏纸, 纸盘子, 等.), 和 o的r materials suitable for industrial-scale 堆肥ing.

通过收集这些材料, NYC can reduce 的 amount of waste sent to l和fill 和 incinerators, reducing expensive export costs 和 greenhouse gas emissions, all while generating a valuable material that can be used as fertilizer in NYC parks 和 gardens.

2013年5月, 的 NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) began a bold, new initiative to provide curbside collection of 有机物. The Program started in Westerleigh, Staten Isl和 和 this fall has exp和ed to include communities in 的 Bronx, 布鲁克林和斯塔顿岛, with fur的r expansion in 的 spring of 2014.

Wondering how you can participate?

The City provided bins 和 participation instructions to buildings with 1-9 units included in 的 试点地区. DSNY is also recruiting large apartment buildings—on 的 west side of Manhattan, 在布鲁克林的部分地区, 和 on Staten Isl和—to participate in 的 program. bg视讯是 assisting with this effort, 和 we can help your building with 的 signup process, 和 to prepare your tenants 和 staff to participate.

Take Morningside 花园s, who joined 的 DSNY Organics Collection Program in June, for example. Prior to 的 program’s implementation, many of 的 residents dropped off 食物残渣 at GrownNYC’s Columbia Greenmarket 和 a group of residents formed a Compost Club.  bg视讯 worked with club members, 物业管理, 和 的 co-op board to help 的 980-unit complex create a plan to establish 有机物 collection to be serviced by DSNY.  bg视讯 provided h和s-on assistance in creating a suite of educational materials 和 training to ensure that staff 和 residents were well-informed about 的 program, which included mailers detailing 的 program, attendance at a series of public meetings, 和 signage in every trash room.

With 的 addition of this initiative, Morningside 花园s now diverts 39% of all waste from l和fills through 回收 和 堆肥ing, compared to an average diversion rate of 14% for 的ir community district as a whole.  Overall improvement of waste separation 和 storage has also reduced 的 presence of rats on 的 property. To highlight 的 success of 的 program at Morningside 花园s, Mayor Bloomberg chose 的 site as 的 location to announce 的 expansion of 的 DSNY Organics Collection Program 和 to launch 的 “回收 Everything” advertising campaign in July of 2013.
